Coal is the usual cargo product on the Colorado Joint Line. One night, I was out later than I should have been to have reasonable expectation of good photos; I was about to head back when I saw the signal come on indicating a south-bound train. I figured I’d give photos a shot. I’m glad I did.
BNSF 3999 is one of the new GE ET44C4 Tier IV engines; the first I’ve captured in the wild (not in the yard). To make it even more interesting, it was pulling a bunch of army equipment — probably back to Ft. Carson.
That doesn’t explain why this guy was running with his ditch lights out. However, since the lights weren’t lit, it might explain his relatively slow speed.
I don’t know what all this stuff is for exactly, but I’m sure the government overpaid for all of it!
These canons all had names stenciled on their barrels.
