Every couple of years we hear stories of people walking or biking the trails who get jumped by one of these. Very beautiful, but not too friendly when they get hungry.

Of all the wildlife we have here in Colorado, mountain lions are the only ones I really think about. I’ve encountered bears before (ironically, more in town than in the wild); but only mountain lions really make me uneasy.

I understand I will likely never know it’s there beforehand, which just makes it easier to imagine an encounter with one going poorly for me. Humans don’t appreciate how vulnerable they are to “mother nature”.

Yeah, that’s normally the story here: The person attacked never knew they were a target until the thing is on them and biting. Scary stuff. I think it was Hobbes of “Calvin and Hobbes” who said, “If the land was flat and you took away guns, people would be tiger food.”

Along from Peanuts and The Far Side, it is one of the most wonderfully well written comic strips ever. (I’m a sucker for Garfield, too, but C&H can be deeper than the Mariana Trench sometimes).
